For about 20 years at the Ole Miss games the band has been playing “From Dixie With Love.” At a certain point in the song the crowd chants “the South will rise again.”
University of Mississippi Chancellor Dan Jones doesn’t like it. He wants it stopped so he instructed the band to stop the song short but the crowd continues anyway, acapella.
The Daily Mississippian, the student run newspaper is reporting that Jones has ordered that the song is off-limits completely now, it will not be played at Ole Miss sporting events at all.
The song is a compilation of the Confederate Army’s fight song, “Dixie,” and the Union Army’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
I have a feeling the Ole Miss fans will find another song, any song, to add the chant too. Tune in next Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 when they are playing Tennessee for an update. The game is scheduled to be televised on CBS.
I’ve been to a couple of Ole Miss football games myself, I heard the chant and never though it was racist. The cheerleaders were mostly white, the players were mostly black and the crowd mixed. Everyone joined in chanting, even the Mexicans.
I really believe most of the racism these days is imputed by others on people who rarely think of the issue untill someone tries to use it for division.
