I’m conservative too. I find that this bill will help with national security because it will free more motivated men to go and fight where motivation is needed rather than sit at home while unmotivated conscripts fight and get killed. It will also provide a better trained pool in case a militia call is raised. Therefore, this bill is NOT evil. I have read the bill and support it.

I’m trying to recall Obama’s “willingness to serve?” When was that exactly???….he’s even had to practice SALUTING his own Miltary guardians on Air Force One and “his” hellicoptors….I guess with all of the SERVING that he did, he has the “right” to require it again, kind of like Bill Clinton did….hmmmmm I feel bad for those in the military now with him as the FEARFUL LEADER….

  4. Wow! what nerve! In case some people forget, serving in our nations government (in any capacity) is an act of civil service. And that is all that this bill calls for, civil service, not necessarily the military. Which is more than most “Americans” can claim to have done for their country. Really, and this is not a cheap shot, but when was the last time any of us did anything for our country? I know when mine was, it was a little over a year ago, and it lasted the six years prior to that. As far as I’m concerned, you shouldn’t be considered a citizen until you do a few years of civil service, at least two anyway. Barack Obama is still serving our country, he risks his life every damn day in case you have noticed, HE’S THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. This means nothing to me, but to many, it makes him a great big target.
The way I see it; Don’t knock a man who is doing more than you are; Don’t bitch about the rules of a country that you are obviously too piss ant scared to defend; and don’t talk about public service if you don’t know what it is. If you don’t like that, STFU and get out.

The executive branch of the government is given the authority to oversee the military. This bill creates a draft for a personal military for the congress. It will be a catastrophy if it passes. Congress can’t manage their own cafeteria.

It is a personal choice (which you Jon most likely support in the case of a womans right to choose abortion) to join the military now. This bill will force people with no choice to serve congress.

  6. It was a little late last night when I read the posts above, and they kinda rubbed me the wrong way, sorry if my opinions came off with a bit much bravado, But I honestly don’t see what the issue should be with being required to do something for your country. Yes, Congress does tend to be a little ridiculous at times, but surely these programs would not be directed solely by Congress, I am sure there would be some system in place to at least hamper a fair amount of the tom-foolery that our upper echelons of the government would be likely to try to impose. I think that America’s youth could be greatly benefited by being given opportunities such as these. It would even open more public service positions up to individuals who would likely never even look for such positions.
Most people have never even thought about it, but these positions range from working for city sanitation and your local Motor Vehicle Division, all the way up to Border Patrol and countless other federal agencies. Jobs that America needs filled, most of which are even salaried positions! Working at DMV may not sound like a great job, but it’s a great opportunity for someone who never bothered to go further than a high school education.
Yes, this plan is not ideal, but it times like these what is? With the fear of looming depression on the forefront of many lower income (and even jobless) families minds, opportunities this would create for a steady income should be a reason to rejoice, not reject.

The problem is that this country was founded on being able to make your own decisions. If the government is hiring and offering various positions, that’s awesome! This is different, the government is specifically REQUIRING MILITARY SERVICE. Obama himself, along with one of his former appointees, expressed their wish to set up a civilian military force. When you say this probably doesn’t necessarily mean military service, you’re thinking of the GIVE act. I believe it’s H.R.1388 and is still going through congress. In it’s present state the GIVE act doesn’t require anything, but expresses intent to establish required community service for everyone from middle-schoolers to the Elderly. The constitution blatantly prohibits this except when community service is deemed due punishment for a crime.

“The Constitution blatantly prohibits this except when community service is deemed due punishment for a crime.” -Brandon Garcia

The Constitution is a guide not fact, as many lawyers and judges know that how you interpret one thing in the Constitution can be varied by the interpreter. It also has amendments and revisions so it is not concrete by any nature. Clearly your view of what the Constitution refers to criminal serving the community is done as punishment–but is that the same as getting placed in a mandatory civil duty that pays?

Clearly no, punishment is work without reward and deprivation whereas this civil service act would bring jobs and money. As the previous poster John Cunningham stated,”with the fear of looming depression on the forefront of many lower income (and even jobless) families minds, opportunities this would create for a steady income should be a reason to rejoice, not reject.”

There are tremendous benefits for our kids to get up off the couch and learn of what goes on outside their neighborhood, as well as earning a bit of money for doing so. If all the youth had to join we may have more voluntary service for full time military, or as John already said, more work awareness for jobs previously unexploited by lower wage earners. This is a chance for kids to open up their narrow view of the world and experience things outside of school like how to cope in a disaster or teamwork in putting things together, as well as taking pride in what their country is.

The idea of the act is to get the citizens more involved and care about our country. Throwing a few coppers at the government and calling things good doesn’t make you value what you have, if anything paying money for a cause is a way of distancing yourself from the cause. The true value in the civil service act is by creating, building, reshaping, and working on something–basically getting your hands dirty.

This isn’t a socialism or a new Natzi party movement, but a way to build patriotism and pride for our disconnected youth of this generation and to ensure future generations can share in our new and stronger country as well.

As I have recounted, this is a business enterprise tool. It’s not only a miracle machine. It could easily turn into a different expense should you not put the commitment into learning how to cash in on it.
